Why Drive An Electric Vehicle?

Owning an EV in New Zealand is more accessible & affordable than you might think.  With an increasing range of vehicles, rebates & an exemption from road user charges available, along with cheap running costs, the transition to an Electric Vehicle (EV) is easier & smarter than ever before.

Depending on your electricity supplier and when you charge your EV, you could save a considerable amount of cost against rising fuel prices & maintenance costs of EVs are low.

Changing to an EV from a petrol or diesel car in NZ cuts your CO2 emissions by up to 80% thanks to NZ's renewable energy capacities & with improved accessible charging infrastructure, you are never far from a charging point.

Wall: Used for business vehicle fleet charging or fast charging at home - Fast AC charge: 4 hours

Public: Used by the general public - Fast AC charge: 4 hours

Rapid DC charge: 45 mins

EV Charging At Home

The ability to charge your EV at home while you sleep is one of the many benefits of ownership, no waiting in line at the garage! Home charging is the most convenient way to charge your vehicle.

Portable Three-Pin Charger - EV Charging

Many EVs come with their own portable three-pin charger, which can be plugged into a normal power point. These types of chargers should have an in-cable control and protection device (ICCPD). Never, use a charger without an ICCPD as it is dangerous.  Whilst home charging using this method is possible, many owners of EVs opt to use this charging method only when away from home or in an emergency.

AC Wall Charger - EV Charging

There is usually a suitable space in your garage or somewhere around the house that will accommodate a wall mounted charging unit - a great way to charge your electric car more efficiently than through a standard three-pin plug with faster charging options if needed.

A correctly sized & installed AC charger is essential for the maximum overnight charge & reliability. The choice of charger will depend on your EV & the amount of power available at your home.

The charger will generally be wall mounted indoors (outside if required) & have its own dedicated electrical supply directly from your home’s switchboard. Some new EVs include a home charger as part of the purchase package, if not our team can assist you in selecting a suitable third party charger.

Benefits Of Home Charging

Cheapest Electricity: Your EV is already cheap to run but using night-rate electricity cuts your cost further

Convenience: Your EV can be charged overnight on your property so its ready to go in the morning

Overnight Charging: Slow overnight charging puts less stress on your EV’s battery leading to longer battery life

Key Features of Zappi Chargers:

Types Of EV Chargers - AC v DC Power

AC - Slow Chargers

Alternating current (AC) charging is slower, generally taking hours to fully charge an EV. Generally found in the home, workplace settings, or public locations & will charge at levels from 7.2kW to 22kW.

Very low output chargers
Generally designed as portable chargers with three pin plugs. Designed for use when you are away from home. Charging rates are limited to 2.3kW or less.

Home based wall mounted chargers

Hard-wired into your home electrical supply using a dedicated circuit back to the switchboard. They typically have charging rates up to 7.4kW.

Public slow chargers

Allow you to top-up your EV while you are doing something else. They often take advantage of a 3 phase electricity supply with charging rates of up to 22kW.

DC - Fast Chargers

DC (direct current), often referred to as fast or rapid chargers have much higher power outputs, which equates to much faster charging. DC chargers are bigger & faster, they range from 22kW – 300kW.

Typically used for speedy charging of your EV, great when you are on the road & need to top-up quickly. Networks of Fast Chargers in New Zealand now allow you to travel the whole country and top-up fast when you are on the move.
